We are delighted to present for sale this superb and very comprehensive rebuild of a very smart Series 2A SWB 88”, in popular deep bronze green. This particular vehicle was one of the very last series 2A models to roll off the production line in August 1971.
This rebuild was carried out by a hobbyist in retirement – my inspirational father. The chassis, engine and parts were delivered to him in the back of a Transit van and the total rebuild was completed in no less than 5 years, there was not a nut or bolt that remained untouched. It is mostly built to the original specification with a vast majority of original parts used or new parts sourced where required. Photographs of the progression of the rebuild were taken at various times, demonstrating the level of quality adhered to.
The vehicle is in immaculate condition and drives very well. The vehicle has always been dry stored and has travelled very few dry miles since the rebuild was completed in Feb 2019.
The factory fitted 2286cc Petrol engine (reputedly the best Land Rover produced) bursts into life at the turn of the key and the engine is quieter and smoother than most Series 2 Land Rovers.
The mileage reading on the odometer is currently 60951 but as this vehicle was acquired with no prior documented history, we cannot guarantee this is the correct mileage pertained to the vehicle.
New brakes including wheel cylinders, brake pipes, shoes and drums. New fuel tanks, shock absorbers, new lights all round, new hoses, clips, door seals, mats, clutch, slave cylinder, master cylinder, new wiring loom, new carburettor, coil, points, ht leads, window channels and there is just too much to list.
Four-wheel drive and low range engage, as they should and the gears change up and down with ease. The steering is as it should be, and the vehicle doesn't wonder on the road like some Series 2 vehicles do. The gearbox has been factory rebuilt.
The bodywork on this example is immaculate and all the panels are straight with very few dents.
On the outside, this vehicle has lots of nice period features such as vintage number plates, rear grab handles, rear mud flaps, original galvanised capping’s.
This is clearly a spray finish rather than the hand painted vehicles we see, and this makes it look great from every angle, not suffering closer inspection as some mottled hand finishes do.
The interior houses two front standard seats, a front-seat belt bar has been fitted to allow for inertia 3 point belts - a nice addition. The rear currently has a further 2 seats and the spear wheel is housed in the rear area. There is a heater fitted with front demist to the windscreen which helps with cold winter mornings and prevents condensation.
Out on the road, the oversized tyres and free wheeling hubs give the vehicle a refined but period driving experience, giving a little more relaxed cruising at speed with improved MPG. The lovely finish means that it really is a head turner wherever it goes!
In summary then, if you are looking for a well sorted, investment Series 2a then this could be for you. With the lovely finish, period drive and popular colour scheme, it should prove a valuable asset. Tie this to the classic insurance and the MOT and Tax Exemption and this should prove cheap to run whilst appreciating in value. There has been no expense spared on this vehicle, if it needed replacing it has been. Many hundreds of hours and thousands of pounds have so far been spent on this rebuild.
